I’ve always loved the koi flags (I forget what they are called in Japanese) flying in the wind like these are displayed. I know they are for Children’s Day, although again I forget the significance. Very cool photos!

In Japan, these are called "Koinobori." There is a long-standing custom of flying carp-shaped streamers on May 5th to pray for the healthy growth of boys. (The girls' version takes place on March 3rd, where Hina dolls are displayed.) According to an ancient Chinese legend, it seems that the carp was a symbol of professional success and resilience. However, since 1948, the day has been officially recognized as "Children's Day" to celebrate all children, regardless of gender.
