I am so behind on all of my Substack reading but I had to read this one right away. You had me at "Manhole Covers." These are glorious and most likely overlooked by people going about their days. Thank you for sharing.

I'm always walking around looking around. (^O^)

The colours and drawings done on the side of the road, even the manhole cover is enchanting and rather impressive. It is interesting that Japan has poured so much attention onto something that in the West people don't put much thought into, which is a shame as I think the duck image is somehow charming and also adds a bit of humour to the road.

Never noticed cracks on the side of the road like this when I was in Japan, as all the roads looked well-maintained, it is important to see such an image to know that not all is perfect in Japan. There are minor imperfections there also, as it is not heaven but still a place on earth.

For some reason, Japanese people like to put illustrations on everything.

Yeah but I miss that trait, it makes things homelier in a way and more recognisably Japanese. No other country does that, there was a time in the 19th century when France did that and I think they should have kept doing that. Japan has retained something that was lost in other countries in that regard and I like that.
