Fewer than before, but luckily there are still many around.

One reason for that is that in this earthquake country, when a big quake hits, mobile communication services are the first to be disrupted. In this respect, land phone lines are much more reliable.

With the spread of mobile phones, the number of public telephones has decreased dramatically, and you rarely see people using them, but as Simone-san says, they are intentionally left as a means of communication in the event of a disaster.

All public telephones on the Shinkansen were removed in 2021, so that photo may now be a valuable record.
