Whenever I see pictures of old public bathhouses, I wonder about the state of their business. With many public bathhouses going out of business due to rising maintenance costs, this is also a traditional Japanese culture, and I worry about its future.

I am saddened to see the disappearance of the Japanese public bath culture. When I was a child, my house did not have a bath, but instead there were three public baths within walking distance. As more and more homes had indoor baths, all of those public baths went out of business. Unfortunately, the decline in users was also an unavoidable negative factor for public baths.

I agree with you that the sharp decline is unavoidable. I hope that the public bathhouse will survive as one of the symbolic cultures of Japan in some way.
