In recent years, roads in Japan have been increasingly color-coded. As you say, the purpose is to increase safety, but there are no national color-coding standards, and each local government assigns colors according to its own judgment.

Perhaps one could make an album of all the interesting color coded roads and offer it for sale? Just an idea :D
