栄 Sakae
(Late 2010s)
Nagoya City is the prefectural capital of Aichi Prefecture. The busiest area in Nagoya is 栄 (Sakae). The symbol of Sakae is the Nagoya TV tower (now called Chubudenryoku Mirai Tower), built in 1954.

Unfortunately, many of the trees in these photos were cut down as part of redevelopment work that took place in 2020, the year after I took them.

Two subway lines intersect in Sakae, and a huge underground mall spreads out around Sakae Station.

Japanese underground streets (Chika-gai 地下街、limited to the big cities) are well lit and clean, lined with many shops. Are there any comparable things in America? Maybe not.
Beautiful trees, sorry to read they are now gone. It was good you have this memory of them.
Thank you.
