The neon sign in the photo above was apparently installed in honor of the Tokyo Olympics held in 1964. Gifu and Tokyo are far apart, but this neon sign symbolizes the fact that the 1964 Olympics was a major event that excited not only Tokyo but the whole of Japan. (By the way, this neon sign was turned off in 2018 because all the bars on this street closed down.)

It's sad when businesses close. An all too common sight, nowadays.
