Fireflies shine beautifully from June to July. Going out to see the glowing fireflies is called “Hotaru Gari (firefly hunting)” in Japanese.
But foolishly, I went there that day without a fast lens or a tripod.

Sadly, Southern California is too dry, I believe, to support fireflies. I have, however, visited North Carolina (on the opposite coast) and beheld them there. Magical little bugs.
