From a Western/Christianish perspective, feudal Japan was horribly cruel, and yet there was also great honor and great beauty then. Judging is not appropriate: different time, different people. When I was a teenager, I sat Zen, practiced Uechi-Ryu Karate-dō, drank hot saki, watched all the samurai movies I could find, including Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy, in one sitting, 4.5 hours. Great beauty, great honor.

One of the most exciting photos ever taken, and honestly it isn't just exciting to think about in terms of what they must have felt, but what ended up happening afterwards; Japan and France bound together in brotherhood.

I love this picture, one of the finest you've shared really liked your note attached to it explaining your thoughts.

The samurai class may have disappeared, but the samurai themselves did not; since they were the most educated people in society at the time and *already* part of its bureaucratic structure, they just transitioned over to positions in the new government.
